The use of laptops in classrooms is something that has already been put into practice by some schools. There are many, though, that have fallen behind in the race and are still adamant about not giving in to the demands of students for individual laptops in classrooms. They fails to realize the fact that these laptops would help students concentrate and learn better during the class hours as they will be subjected to a more interactive environment of learning that is more interesting than the traditional lecture methods. They can conduct substantial research and complete assignments by means of laptops contrary to the belief that the gadgets will only prove to be more of a distraction for the young minds.
With the debate continuing and the jury still being undecided on going one way or the other, here are some favorable points that will lend weight-age to the righteous demands of students for a laptop.
- An acquaintance with computers: In the modern age, it is essential that students learn the usage of computers from a very early age. Being able to properly operate these devices and the myriad of computer programs available will hold them in good stead for life after graduation as most employers look for the those individuals who are confident, knowledgeable and comfortable within the realms of computers and associated technology. Thus, by giving each student a laptop, it is ensured that they are involved in an active learning process on the usage of technology in day-to-day activities. Rather than just playing games or surfing the net, students also get to know about the applications of important programs. Also, having a laptop while participating in Maths and English classes results in a student learning about both the technologies and the associated subjects. This eliminates the need for a separate computer training program in the academic planning.
- A motivation to learn: When it comes to learning new things, many students are in need of fun and interactive lessons to learn properly. This is a phenomena that has been created due to the many distractions of technology all around them that makes them crave for entertaining means of learning. It has been observed that many students are not able to perform well in a traditional classroom environment that is all about books and no technology. The use of laptops and interactive programs along with an encouragement towards researching more on the lesson topics can make learning more of a fun activity for all the bright, young minds. The use of books is necessary but laptops provide an excellent supplement for these learning materials. The variety of computer programs specific to the subject area can also make teaching an interesting activity for the instructors.
